Who's a Real Poet?
Most real poets - the homerun hitters, the base stealers, the game savers - not necessarily famous (at least in their lifetime) - but the ones who make the game exciting are the ones who have lived poetic lives. What does that mean? Well, to me it means the ones who live their lives like every moment is sacred and matters. The ones who have a passion and a zest for life that takes them out of the mundane even when they might exist in a mundane situation. It's the only way one can write truly great poems. Your art will be nothing more than your heart can produce. Want to write passion filled poetry? Then live a passionate life and be aware of it. Want nature to come alive in your poetry? Spend time outside. Want adventure and romance in your poetry? You know what I'm going to say. I'm not saying it's always safe and I'm certainly not telling you what to do. I'm just letting you know my opinion, and I think that if you're not a very engaging person, if you're dull and unaware of the world around you except for what you happen to come upon when the remote is in your hand your poetry most likely won't be very good. Now I'm not saying that you should walk in the footsteps of Ezra Pound and get arrested and committed or drink and drug yourself into brilliance like Poe or Bukowski but I am saying if you want to write great poetry you need to be true to yourself and try to live a great life and don't miss writing any of it down!
